Mariachi Alegre has become one of the greater Southwest’s favorite mariachis entertaining since 1995. The musicality and versatility of the group only grows stronger as time passes and the group changes. Playing together for a little over a year, this group of musicians has managed to accomplish what previously had only been dreamt. The group consists of five violinists, two trumpets, and four rhythm players. Hailing from El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico, the members of Mariachi Alegre have been busy this year. They have had the opportunity to travel all over the Southwest, from Alamogordo to Van Horn, serenading and creating mariachi music lovers. In August 2001, Mariachi Alegre was invited to instruct their first mariachi mini-conference in Roswell, New Mexico. The group also traveled to Orlando, Florida in October 2001 to participate in Walt Disney World’s Magic Music Days under the instruction of Mariachi Cobre. Planting the seed of music in the community’s youth is as important to Mariachi Alegre as continuing to learn and grow themselves. This is why members of the group participate actively in the instruction of young musicians. Mariachi Espuelas de Plata of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Mariachi Solecitos de El Paso are two youth groups who continue bringing mariachi music to their communities under the instruction of members of Mariachi Alegre. The group hopes to not only influence musicians around their community, but take their music to as many people possible around the country. |
